Philosophy of Counseling

Dr. Golden believes counseling is a meaningful, relational, time-bound, and goal-oriented process in which the counselor serves as a vessel in the healing and transformation process.

  • Meaningful: The counseling process is an intentional, thoughtful, and professional relationship wherein the counselor supports the client in the working relationship.

  • Relational: Counseling is highly successful when the counselor and client develop a high level of mutual trust and respect.

  • Time-Bound: The counseling relationship is not intended to last forever. The counselor’s goal is to help guide, support, and empower the client to be independent of the counselor’s help at some point in the future.

  • Goal-Oriented: One of the very first tasks in counseling is to develop healthy, collaborative goals for the client to work toward. It is the responsibility of the client to verbalize goals for counseling, and it is the responsibility of the counselor to help the client mold, shape, and work toward those goals.

  • Counselor as a Vessel: The counselor recognizes that she is not the “savior” in the counseling process, but one of many vessels of hope and healing in the client’s life.

  • Healing and Transformation Process: Most people do not seek out counseling when they believe they are at their best. Many people seek counseling as a result of pain, trauma, confusion, loss of hope, or other generalized suffering. Working from a biblical worldview, the counselor recognizes that while ultimate healing and transformation is not yet attainable, there is great hope and healing in this world, with the promise of ultimate healing to come.

  • Religious Orientation: Though the counseling organization and counselor does not discriminate against or disrespect clients based on spirituality or religious beliefs, the counselor’s orientation is decidedly Christian.
